Kurdish intelijensiya
The Kurdish intelijensiya –though its existence might be questioned- has approached the issue in accordance with its political engagements and has not had an objective and honorable attitude. Many of those close to the Kurdish movement, as expected, have supported the call unconditionaly. A high number of intellectuals with similar political engagements have remained silent on the same issue. It seems that this silence does not necessarily mean they approve of the call but rather is due to the risk of expressing their opinions.
Nationalists without a foundation
Conversely, individuals who are known as sworn enemies of the movement have attacked Ocalan and his letter. This same group of people has viewed the call to end the armed struggle and the dissolution of the PKK as an opportunity to promote their baseless nationalism. The positions of these two opposing factions of intellectuals have prevented the call from being publicly discussed by Kurdish people, which could hugely impact on their future.
PKK and its affiliated organizations
As polarization and silence have put intellectuals in a shameful position, what has been the position of the PKK and its affiliated organizations? Many, regardless of their political engagement with the movement, had hoped that the party would consider people`s concerns about this call and adjust it according to the reality on the ground. However, the party shattered these hopes with an announcement that energetically supported the letter calling for its dissolution, using highly praising language.
The political elites
The Kurdish political elites in Turkey, on the other hand, have not fulfilled their responsibilities, aside from delivering Ocalan`s letter. These elites whose priority is their positions in Ankara rather than Kurdistan, have long lost their operational independence and thus can not negotiate the final call with the movement. Due to these facts, the risk in front of the Kurdish people is not just an integration with the Turkish state on the basis of assimilation but the silence of intellectuals, blind support for the call and blind attacks against it.
