International delegation visiting Istanbul has called for the immediate and unconditional release of Kurdish leader Abdullah Ocalan
A 39-member international delegation visiting Istanbul has called for the immediate and unconditional release of Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan and other political prisoners in Turkey.
The delegation’s visit is part of the “I Want to Visit Abdullah Öcalan” campaign, launched in June by the European Forum for Freedom and Peace (EFFP). The campaign calls for in-person visits to Öcalan, who has been held in isolation at Imralı Island Prison for 26 years, and urges a peaceful, democratic resolution to the Kurdish question.
The delegation includes academics, politicians, civil society representatives, and journalists from across Europe and Japan. On Tuesday, members submitted a petition to Öcalan’s lawyers and met with DEM Party Co-Chair Tuncer Bakırhan.
During a roundtable meeting in Taksim, attended by prominent Kurdish politicians and activists, the delegation issued a joint declaration supporting Öcalan’s call for peace and democratic reform. They stressed that his release is essential for meaningful dialogue and lasting peace in Turkey.
The statement urged Turkish authorities to respect human rights, engage in genuine negotiations with the Kurdish community, and fulfill their international obligations. The delegation pledged to continue monitoring developments and supporting democratic efforts in Turkey.
