Turkey’s role with Islamist groups in Syria praised by Trump

Donald Trump highlighted Turkey’s historic and strategic role in Syria, praising President Erdoğan’s leadership. “They’ve wanted it for thousands of years, and now they got it,” Trump said, emphasising Turkey’s control over key Syrian territories.

US President-elect Donald Trump, on Monday in Florida, has hailed Turkey’s “historic ties to Syria” and its current dominance, asserting that Ankara holds the key to the war-torn country’s future.

Reflecting on Turkey’s influence, Trump remarked, “They’ve wanted it for thousands of years, and he got it. Those people that went in are controlled by Turkey, and that’s OK.” His comments, delivered during a press conference at his Palm Beach residence, underscored Turkey’s pivotal role in reshaping Syria’s political landscape.

Turkey, a NATO ally, has established control over swathes of northern Syria following cross-border incursions targeting the Syrian Kurdish People’s Defence Units (YPG). It was also a key supporter of opposition forces that ousted Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who was backed by Russia and Iran since the civil war’s onset in 2011.

“Turkey did an unfriendly takeover without a lot of lives being lost,” Trump said, praising its strategic approach. He further lauded Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, calling him a leader with whom he had an excellent relationship. “Erdoğan is somebody I got along with great. He’s built a very strong, powerful army,” Trump added.

The US and Turkey have continued discussions on preventing an Islamic State resurgence in Syria, where Washington maintains approximately 900 troops. When questioned about the future of these forces, Trump was noncommittal, instead pointing to Turkey’s military strength and regional influence.

“Right now, Syria has a lot of, you know, there’s a lot of indefinites,” Trump said. “I think Turkey is going to hold the key to Syria.”

Trump’s remarks highlight the strategic importance of Turkey’s actions and historical ties as regional dynamics continue to evolve following the collapse of the Ba’ath regime.
